# Is Bitcoin anonymous?

Bitcoin is pseudonymous. Addresses carry no names, but every transaction is public and permanent, so once one of your addresses is tied to you, anyone can read its history and the addresses linked to it.

Also called Bitcoin anonymity or Bitcoin traceability.

## What the chain records

Every transaction lists the addresses it spends from and pays to, with the amounts and the time, and the record never goes away. Explorers make all of it searchable, so anyone can see the balance and the transactions of any address.

## How addresses get linked

- Spending from several addresses in one transaction usually means one owner, which the Bitcoin whitepaper already pointed out.
- The change a payment sends back can often be told apart from the payment itself.
- Reusing an address ties every payment to it together.
- Buying coins on an exchange that knows your identity links your first address to your name.

## What helps

A fresh address for every payment and a careful choice of which coins to spend make linking harder. Lightning payments don’t show up on the chain one by one, although opening and closing a channel does.

## In Redacted

In Redacted, Bitcoin lives in your private balance as a THORChain secured asset. You deposit once, and from then on swaps, trades and loans from your Spending account have no visible tie to the address you came from.

- [Linked addresses](https://redacted.gg/glossary/linked-addresses.md): Linked addresses are addresses that chain analysis attributes to the same owner, most often because they were spent together in one Bitcoin transaction. Once one of them is tied to a name, all of them are.
- [Address reuse](https://redacted.gg/glossary/address-reuse.md): Address reuse means receiving more than one payment to the same address. Every payment to it is then linked to all the others, and to everyone who sent them.
- [Wallet tracing](https://redacted.gg/glossary/wallet-tracing.md): Yes. On public chains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum every transaction is stored for good, so anyone can follow where a wallet’s money came from and where it went. A wallet stays pseudonymous only until one address is tied to a name.
- [Chain analysis](https://redacted.gg/glossary/chain-analysis.md): Chain analysis traces funds on public blockchains and groups addresses into likely owners, using the public record together with outside data such as exchange records, address labels and leaks.
